The Medicinal Value of CBD

Cannabis has many active chemical constituents and two of these constituents, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) have been investigated the most in respect of their medicinal value.

CBD is the non-psychoactive component and modulates the psychoactive effect of THC. This discovery sparked research on medical CBD treatment and the use of cannabidiol medicine for various health conditions—the most serious of which we’ve listed below. Other suggestions for cannabidiol treatment use include chronic pain relief and anxiety management.

Medical cannabinoid is known to treat chronic pain, especially pain related to arthritis and multiple sclerosis. As a result, it could improve quality of sleep. The calming benefits of CBD oil shows promising results for people with anxiety and depression. It can also reduce cancer treatment-related symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

Medical CBD is also thought to reduce psychotic symptoms and ease people into substance abuse treatment.

The use of CBD oil medicine is generally tolerated by people who undergo CBD treatment, though there may be some exceptions. Its advantages often depend on a patient’s condition and other medications they could be taking for their ailments.

For example, it can increase the level of drugs like Coumadin, prescription medication used to treat blood clots, in an individual’s blood. So to avoid potentially harmful interactions and side effects, it’s important to consult a CBD expert before asking for a cannabinoid prescription.

Keep in mind that CBD treatment remains a medical supplement rather than actual medication. However, there is good evidence to support clinical use for:

  • Epilepsy (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome).

There are small clinical trials and/or case reports to support use for:

  • Schizophrenia/Psychosis

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Dystonia and Dyskinesia,

  • Parkinson’s Disease

  • Autism

  • Dependency & Withdrawal

  • Graft Vs. Host Disease

  • Sleep

  • Addiction related disorders

Basic science and/or pre-clinical studies suggests that CBD may be used for:

  • Neuroprotection

  • Inflammation

  • Cancer

  • Obesity

  • Ischemia

  • Depression

  • Chronic pain – Neuropathic and inflammatory

  • Skin Diseases

  • Nausea and vomiting (CBDA/CBD)

  • Increased bone density
