The Medicinal Value of THC

Cannabis has many active chemical constituents and two of these constituents, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) have been investigated the most in respect of their medicinal value.

THC is the major psychoactive component and may have beneficial effects for:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Chronic and cancer pain

  • Muscle spasticity

  • Improving sleep

  • Improving appetite

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has licensed three drugs based on cannabinoids. Dronabinol, the generic name for synthetic D9-THC, is clinically indicated to counteract the nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and to stimulate appetite in AIDS patients affected by wasting syndrome.

A synthetic analog of D9-THC, nabilone is used for similar indications. Both dronabinol and nabilone are given orally and have a slow onset of action. A liquid formulation of dronabinol, for the treatment of patients experiencing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting who have not responded to conventional antiemetic therapies. Dronabinol is also indicated for treating anorexia associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS.

It’s necessary to consult a cannabis clinician to determine whether the psychoactive components of THC are compatible with the health condition or symptoms that the individual wants to address. It is most commonly used to ease nausea, glaucoma and pain related to multiple sclerosis or nerves-related health conditions.

THC medicine generally has many advantages. But it’s still important to be informed about the possibility of temporary side effects like dry mouth, red eyes, hunger, slow response times, coordination issues and increased heart rates. None of these side effects are serious or fatal. When THC medicinal treatment is administered and taken therapeutically, its benefits could far outweigh any of these side effects.

Keep in mind that CBD and THC medical treatment aren’t entirely the same. Both are used to help ease chronic pain, nausea and anxiety. They share many medical benefits. They can provide relief for several of the same health conditions.

But whereas CBD is more effective for inflammation, psychosis and mental health concerns, THC is more appropriate for conditions like muscle spasticity, low appetite and insomnia. Let’s discuss your options today.
